Winter tops for floral baskets

Decorative tops, known as 'finials',for the hanging basket standards on the bridge are to be purchased to replace the baskets for the winter season.

Kilcullen Community Action volunteers will be removing the baskets shortly, and the new tops are to take the bare look off the poles.

Meanwhile, KCA members will also clear the dead plants from the decorative boxes through the town and plant new bulbs for winter and spring flowering.

At a recent meeting there was some discussion on the merits or not of planting for winter, but it was decided to go ahead anyhow as a commitment had been made to a supplier.

In response to queries as to how the bulbs currently to hand might be identified before planting, Celia Travers suggested that they call it a 'surprise year'.

"We'll just plant what we have and see what comes up."
