Duo at Ballyomore Inn
Kevin Doherty and James Delaney play the back room at The Ballymore Inn on Monday night March 6.
Kevin, guitar and vocals, has a long career behind him already, being well known for his work with Four Men and a Dog. But his solo work is what really stands out.
Donegal born and bred, Kevin is an imposing figure on stage with a presence that more than fills any room he stands in. Charisma by the bucket load. His physical stature belies his gentle nature that gives voice to a collection of songs that are at once literary in reference and accessible.
With a history of traditional music to draw from he creates a unique sound that reflects that influence but is contemporary with a modern folk/roots/bluesy feel.
I have had the great pleasure of working with Kevin on several occasions and I am always struck by the sense that the listener is in the presence of something great, something beautiful, something not easily defined.
Kevin's partner in crime is one of the finest piano/keyboard players this country has ever produced - namely James Delaney.
While James' heart is, I suspect in the blues, his playing suggests that there is an invisible ligament connecting his fingers with his heart. Dublin born, James has played with many of the greats, including our own Mary Coughlan. In fact I have worked with James on two occasions when he was Mary's sole accompaniament, and it is to his credit that whether part of an outfit or the piano part of a piano and vocal combo, he plays just enough, never overshadowing his co-performers. But when afforded the opportunity for a solo/improvised part, he excels himself.
Enough waxing lyrical - come to the gig and see for yourselves. Doors open 9pm. Sound by yours truly.
Roy Thompson.
