KCA to check on €100,000

Kilcullen Community Action is to write to Kildare County Council to find out the status of €100,000 allocated to work on the bridge for this year.

During a discussion on the state of the footpaths on the bridge, Noel Clare revealed that the Department of the Environment had allocated the money some years ago from the Village Renewal Scheme, but it wasn't clear where the money is.

"It was allocated to Kildare County Council specifically for the bridge, for this year's budget, as a contribution to the community in tandem with the tax incentives which were provided for town development."

And he noted that he'd had to contact the Department of the Environment himself to find out about the allocation.

The meeting heard comments that there was no guarantee that the Council would use the money for the bridge, or even in Kilcullen, and it was decided that the Council be contacted to ascertain the status of the funds.

Kieran Forde noted that it would be much better if the community could gain control of how that allocation should be spent. "What we could do with €100,000 would be a lot more than what the Council would say any work costs," he said.
