Kilcullen needs protection from 'lower-order retail outlets' — Cllr

Kilcullen is one of four towns where Kildare County Council is being asked to 'strengthen policies against inappropriate levels of lower-order retail outlets', writes Brian Byrne.

The request by Cllr Padraic McEvoy is in the context of the County Kildare Development Plan currently being examined by the Council and local representatives.

Cllr McEvoy, who is in the Maynooth MD, says that the increased presence of budget retailers, betting shops and takeaway outlets serves to 'undermine the profile and ambience of Core Retail Areas'.

Because increased mobility means that there's less consumer loyalty to businesses in rural towns, the councillor is asking that 'the over-provision of lower-order retail should be a significant factor in the decision about additional outlets of the same type'.

His comment also references Clane, Monasterevin and Sallins.
