Kilcullen Drama Group gets world amateur premiere

Kilcullen Drama Group's next production will be The Quare Land, by John McManus, writes Brian Byrne.

There are just two characters, and a bathtub, in the production, the dates for which have not yet been set at the time of writing.

The plot concerns a cantankerous old farmer having his first bath in several years being visited by a developer who wants part of his land to extend a golf course.

Bernard Berney and Vivian Clarke are the two playing the parts (guess which is the 'cantankerous' one?), and the production will be directed by Eilis Phillips.

Eilis first saw the play at the Irish Repertory Theatre during a visit to New York, and when she got home she made contact with the author, who is from Cavan.

It turns out that Kilcullen will be the first amateur drama group to perform The Quare Land since it was first produced in 2010.

John McManus wrote his first radio play in 2005. No Hate Going to Loss won the PJ O’Connor award, while Will You Swap Knees With Me? came joint third in the same competition.
