Kilcullen Ladies AFC ready for crunch final
The Kilcullen Ladies AFC team will play Bridge United from Athy in the final of the Kildare League on Monday 19 September, writes Brian Byrne.
The game is in Newbridge Soccer Ground on the Station Road, and kickoff is 7.30pm.
It is the first year of the Kildare League, and eight teams from the county have been involved in the competition.
Linda Price of the Kilcullen management team—she works with Taige Shanahan and Darragh Talbot—recalls the first league in which the Kilcullen ladies played, back in the 1990s.
"It was the Dublin League and we reached the semi-final, which was played here in Kilcullen. But we didn't have the floodlit facility which we have now, and it went on into extra time. It got dark, so everybody who had a car had to park around the pitch with the headlights on so we could finish the game."
Kilcullen won that one, but was beaten in the final held in Dublin.
Meantime, the upcoming final game is particularly important to the Kilcullen ladies. This season they have only lost twice—to Bridge United.
