School opens library

A new school library was opened in St Joseph's National School in Halverstown last Friday.

The ceremony was performed by Caroline Farrell of Kildare School Library Services.

The library is located in a former cloakroom in the two-teacher school.

"We were able to do it with help from the Parents Committee," school principal Esther Reddy told the Diary.

The school, which was built in 1959, has 27 pupils. Most of them are pictured below.

On Wednesday last, World Book Day, the older students went to see the Book of Kells, and the younger ones were brought to Kilcullen Library to browse through the books there.

In another innovation, the students recently completed a large mural on the wall of the shelter in the play yard.

"We have a thing about blank walls here," Esther said. "Mary Domican drew the outline of St Brigid spreading her cloak across Kildare, as in the old mythology. Then the children filled in the colours."

Some of the pupils are pictured above with their result, along with Mary.
