KBC contest the Grade 3 League Final.

Kilcullen Badminton Club contested another South West League Final on Monday 06 March, writes Club PRO Enda O'Neill, this time it was the turn of Owen Wallace and his Grade 3 Mix team to represent the club.

In an action packed final the Rags played League favourites Baltinglass in Carlow YM badminton clubs hall. Baltinglass like Kicullen had topped their respective groups and all indications showed that it was going be a tight, exciting final and unlike most finals this match lived up to all the expectations.

The match was tied 2-2 going into the mix double discipline, the KBC outfit lost their first two mix games but John “the Fox” Mullen and Bernie Smyth kept the hopes alive winning the third mix. Kilcullen needed to win the last game to have a chance of winning the League Final. Alas in a cracking last game Barbara Coffee and Ray Dalton were beaten in three sets.

Congratulations to Owen, Bernie Smyth, Barbara Coffee, Karen O’Neill, Tara O’Neill, John Mullen, Mick Cass and Ray Dalton on getting to the Final and representing our club, also the team would like to thank all the support they got from the club supporters.

As we draw close to the knockout stages of the Dublin District League, Kilcullen played four matches this week.

Lynsey Walsh and her Division 2 Mix team hosted Mount Pleasant on Tuesday 7 March in the return match between the two sides. Lynsey and her team had taken a 2-2 draw in Mount Pleasant and the home fixture ended again 2-2, with some cracking matches. This draw does however keep the KBC side second in the league and keeps the Pleasant three points behind KBC, Lynsey and her quartet look set to make the knock out stages and play bottom of the table Boyne in their last match where a draw will guarantee KBC a semi final spot. Well done to Lynsey, Gillian K Smith, Eoin Bourke and sub David Jackson on a solid performance.

On Thursday 9 March Owen Wallace and his Division 4 Mix made the long trek to Kilmessan, the final score in this one was 2-2, Kilcullen sharing the spoils. Even with this hard earned draw Owen and the team are third in the league and will find it difficult to exit this difficult group. It's still been a great season for the team who havn’t embarrassed themselves in their first season together. Owen, Barbara Coffee, Karen O’Neill and Mick “the Gazelle” Cass will play second place PSLC in their next fixture.

In the first of our two home matches held in the Complex on Thursday 9 March, John Mullen and his band of merry men hosted table toppers Clane in a top of the table clash. John and the lads have proven tough opponents and have only lost one game this season, this to the now third place Vikings. In the away fixture Kilcullen drew with Clane in a warm low roofed hall. Again Clane and Kilcullen couldn’t be separated and again the outcome of this match was a 2-2 draw. So with two group matches left Clane have 13 points, Kilcullen have 11 points and Viking have 11 points, but the Kilcullen lads have one match in hand. Good luck to John, Vincent Coller, Ray Dalton and Enda O’Neill in their next match at home to Smash.

Finally Meave Valroy (our queen of cakes and all things sweet!) and the Division 8 Ladies played St Raphael's. Our cup finalists beat the Raphael Ladies 3-1 in their away fixture but unfortunately had to be content with a draw in their home fixture. The Ragettes are currently third in the group and still have a good chance of qualifying for the knock out stages. Well played to Maeve, Emer Flynn, Grace Elliot and super sub Mari Gallagher on a well played match last night. Maeve's next outing is at home to St Pauls and good luck in that fixture.
