Success at South West Championship for KBC

Kilcullen Badminton Club had great success in the South West Championships, writes Club PRO Enda O'Neill. All the finals were held on Saturday 21 January in Carlow Lawn Tennis Club. Kilcullen left with four Championship winners and four runner up medals.

Tara O’Neill and Lynsey Walshe contested the Grade 2 Ladies Final against club mate Sinead Kelly and an ex Ragette Rachel Cass. In an entertaining match Lynsey and Tara won it in two sets. A great result all round for KBC.

Lynsey was out again in the Grade 2 Mix Final with Robert Butler of Johnswell. The opponents on this occasion were Sarah Kenneally and Aubrey Cox from Carlow YM. Lynsey and Robert managed to out smart the wily Carlow pair in a great final befitting the grade that they play in. Well done Lynsey and Robert.

In the Grade 3 Ladies Final KBC had three representatives with KBC pair,Tara O’Neill and Siobhan Willis playing KBC’s Debbie Mangan and Rhoda Griffith. In a tense three setter Tara and Siobhan came away with a fantastic 2-1 win in a tight final.

In the Grade 4 Mix Sarah Walshe and Vincent Coller contested the final against Athy Pair Bernie Lowry and Joe Dalton of Athy. This turned out to be another cracking final going all the way to three sets with the Kilcullen pair pipping the Athy pair at the post. Well done Sarah and Vincent.

In the Dublin District Cup on Friday 20 January, John Mullen and the Division 5 Men visited newly formed club Smash in their quarter final match. It wasn’t the lads night however and the normal fast out of the blocks KBC side found it hard to get momentum in the match. John and Vincent Coller were beaten in two sets in the first game. In the second after loosing the first set 24-22 Ray Dalton and Enda O’Neill lost in a one sided second set. Ray and Vincent did give the KBC side a chance when they won the third game in two sets, but when John and Enda lost the first set to the Smash pair the match was also lost. KBC beaten 3-1 in a tough match. Hard luck to the lads who now can concentrate in their Dublin District League campaign and their next match away to St Brigids on Tuesday 24 January.

At home on the same night Tara O’Neill and her Division 4 Ladies hosted St Brigids of Dublin. In a one sided match Tara and her wonder women trashed the St Brigids team 4-0. This win leaves Tara, Siobhan Willis, Karen Malone and Bernie Smith in a very strong position on top of the League table, well done to the girls.
