Badminton update

On Wednesday 5 October three matches were played outside the holy sanctuary of the Community Centre, writes Kilcullen Badminton Club PRO Enda O’Neill.

First out were Gillian K Smith and the Grade 1 Ladies who visited Johnswell of Kilkenny. The ladies had a tough start to their league the previous week with a defeat at home to Portarlington. Unfortunatley the ladies couldn’t pick themselves up and were on the receiving end of another 5-1 defeat. Hard luck to Gillian, Lynsey Walsh, Debbie Mangan and Sinead Kelly who in fairness are playing at the higest level in the Southwest League. The ladies next venture is away to table toppers Portarlington on Thursday 20 October.

Eoin Bourke and his Grade 2 Men were out away to Portarlington. Port is always a hard hall to visit, (a bit like going to the San Siro!) but the lads were eager to continue their great start to the league. Eoin and his team mates didn’t dissappoint and managed to grab a vital 4-2 win. The Grade 2 Men now sit top of the table with nine points, well done to Eoin, Murt “manwich” Dunne, David Jackson and Gareth Hogan. Good luck to the guys in their next fixture againist Kildare on Tuesday 18 October.

Owen Wallace and the Grade 3 Mens A team played their first Southwest league match away to Carlow YM. This match was also the debut match for new member Barry O’Neill and it was a successful night for the lads. Owen and his team took the match comfortably 5-1, the guys only dropping one set. The lads will have tougher opposition in their next fixture at home to Carlows Ballinabranna but well done to Owen, Martin Carrigan, Mick Cass and Barry on a great start to their league.

Thursday 6 October saw Mari Gallagher and her Grade 5 Ladies visit Portlaoise. Mari and her team were promoted up a grade this year due to there strong preformaces in Grade 6 last season. The ladies justified the move up with a brilliant 5-1 win. Well done Mari, Emer Flynn, Orla Brophy and Grace Elliot.

Our second Thursday fixture was Portlaoise hosting Oliviers Grade 6 Men, how Olivier finds the time to play badminton and run his fabulous Resturaunt “Les Olivies” escapes me. You will find “Les Olivies” which he owns with his equally talened wife Maeve in Naas or check out their Facebook page. (I’ve had the pleasure of dining there and it is a must visit for any gastronome). Unfortunatley it wasn’t to be the lads night and they were beaten 4-2 in a close game of badminton. Hard luck to Olivier, Morgan H Lynch, Stephen Kennedy and Sean McGrath.

Finally good luck to all the KBC players playing in the Kadca tournement on Saturday 08 October.
