DID YOU KNOW?

The British Royal household has a person called a swan marker, a position going back to the 12th century when the British monarch had a right to claim any swans found swimming in open waters, unmarked. An annual census of the swans, known as swan upping, is led by the swan marker on a stretch of the River Thames. It takes five days, using a fleet of traditional rowing skiffs. Swans were once considered a delicacy by the Royals, but today the census is all about conservation and education.

The Diary was out of town for the weekend and couldn’t cover the rest of the National Cycling Championships. But Tom Horan’s excellent photographs of the overall event can be seen here.
