Badminton update

What a weekend it turned out to be for two of KBC’s Juvenile Clubs who were involved with the Under 13 Kildare Mix team who played in the Intercounty Round Robin Cup, writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of Kilcullen Badminton Club.

The Kildare team are made up from players from all over the county and are coached by Gareth Hogan (also a Kilcullen player!) and the two young men in question were David and Kevin Downey.

Kildare won the preliminary rounds beating Kilkenny C, Dublin A and Meath B which put them through to the Division 1 Round Robin. In their first match Kildare beat Killkenny A in a thrilling 3-2 match, Kildares second match turned out to be a more straight forward affair with the Kildare outfit taking the match 5-0 against Meath A. The final game against Wexford A was a tough match and Kildare were beaten 3-2, this result however was enough to win it for the Kildare team as Wexford A had lost sets against Kilkenny A and Meath A. Kildare took the Division 1 title by 10 sets in the end.

It was expected that Dublin A would come out of the preliminary group and that Wexford A the favourites would win the title. David, Kevin and the Kildare team and their expert coach Gareth will now represent Leinster in the All Ireland Finals being held in Badminton HQ, Baldoyle on April 19. Good luck to the Kildare team in the finals but especially the Kilcullen crew David and Kevin Downey and of course Gareth Hogan.

A special mention has to go to Gareth who does so much for the underage badminton in the county but also in our club, Gareth you’re an unsung hero and we really hope that you and the team can do well in the All Irelands but getting there is a massive achievement alone.

Finally we end with two results from the senior club, Olivier's Mens 4 Division 8 side were away to Raheny in Baldoyle on Monday 08 March. It was another disappointing night for the lads who were beaten 3-1. At present Olivier's men lie in third place in the group and are now 3 points off second place Raheny and have it all to do in the group. All is not lost however and the lads can still qualify in second if results go the right way. Best of luck to the lads in the rest of the league.

Murt's Mens 1 Division 3 team are currently top of the table and travelled away to An Caislain Nua also on Monday 8 March. KBC’s table toppers needed a win to put some more daylight between themselves and the rest of the pack. The lads didn’t disappoint and came away with an impressive 4-0win. Well done to the mens 1 who are now certain to make the quarter finals.
