Community Survey researchers deadline

Six voluntary community researcher positions available with the Kilcullen Community Survey organised by KCA could provide valuable experience to candidates who are currently seeking work, writes Brian Byrne.

Alternatively they might be attractive to people who are retired, or working part-time, and who would like the opportunity to do something different which gets them directly involved in the community.

For either group, taking up the part-time and short-term positions will have no impact on any Social Welfare positions which currently relate to the applicants. A payment allocated by KCA to cover expenses for each of the researchers is simply that, and doesn't come under the heading of earned income.

The closing date for applications is next Friday, 9 September. Application forms are available from KCAResearchers@gmail.com. Completed forms should be emailed in by 5pm on the Friday, and interviews will be held the following week.

The survey is a very important one for the future of Kilcullen, as it will provide both a snapshot of the community at this time as well as an indication of hopes for its future.

Questions on the use of local amenities and those in neighbouring communities will be accompanied by queries on what services gaps there are currently.

With a targeted coverage of up to a quarter of the estimated 2,000 home units in Kilcullen, Gilltown and Carnalway, the researchers will also be looking for views on the local environment, as well as ideas for development of the town.

The requirements for candidates include an ability to carry out door-to-door surveys, good interpersonal skills, self-motivation, an access to on-line data entry either using their own laptops during the survey or at home after getting results down on paper. Use of the broadband facilities at Kilcullen Library is an option for those without their own access.

Two training sessions are planned, and each researcher will be allocated up to 85 home units to survey. Total working time is envisaged at between 25-50 hours.

In addition to the expenses allocation of €500 per researcher, a small fuel allowance will be available for those covering the rural areas of the community.
