DIARY COMMENT

As regular readers will have noticed, on Friday we reported the departure of the last two street phone boxes from Kilcullen.

There's no question that they were probably redundant, and only used occasionally by people who wanted to get in out of the rain. But their passing from our lives marks the end of an era which began with 'press button A' for connection, and 'press button B' to get your money back, and finished with the relatively short-lived Phonecard.

With mobile phones carried by virtually everyone in the population, it isn't hard to see why Eircom is taking out almost half of such facilities.

But a small thought. Given that the company had such a long time to arrange the removals, why didn't they bring along a few cobble-lock bricks to more closely match the existing footpath? The cement they used instead will be just as ugly a patch for probably decades to come, and it didn't even get the chance to set before graffiti hit.
