Memory Lane: Naas Cotton Mills 1956

This one is a little outside the parish, but we're nevertheless putting these pictures on the Diary because they may strike chords of memory among some of our readers.

They come courtesy of Mario Colombo in Italy, a former manager from Naas Cotton Mills, and show a procession through Naas to the factory on May 1 1956, when a statue of the Blessed Virgin was installed in the premises.

Fr P J Doyle blessed the statue, and Mario Colombo is in the picture with the pipe band. I don't know if the band is the Narraghmores, but perhaps somebody out there can clarify it?

There is likely a valid Kilcullen connection, because in those times there was no industry here and many people from the town travelled to places like Naas and Newbridge to work in the various factories in those places.

Do you see anyone in the march that you know from here?

Brian Byrne.
