Brannockstown pulls Tidy Towns weight
Brannockstown community is totally involved in getting the village ready for the upcoming Tidy Towns adjudication.
Those involved range from the oldest to the youngest, with many retired people doing their bit to show their pride in their 'place'. Typical are Rory Mackey, Lil Clifford, Queenie Whelan, Monica Conway, Herbie Eager, Brid Mackey, Jim Mackey, pictured above with Tidy Towns activist John Brady at the village pump which was renovated last year.
"Most of those people would have drawn water from that pump during their lives," John says. "Although now you can't — the council won't allow it, because of the number of septic tanks around."
John is very happy at the support from the residents of Brannockstown for the Tidy Town effort. "If you organise something for the village and people know about it, anyone who can will turn up to help."
There was also a special effort made by the children of Brannockstown National School this week, when they took part in the planting of flower beds (above) with the help of their teachers and local man Steve Schwer.
And working on the project most of his time is Denis Farrell, from Cannicourt, who is a FAS operative in the area. When the Diary caught up with him, he was tidying the eastern approach to Brannockstown.
